Summer homework-NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A stressed student
Don't you just love the summer? The fireflies light up the night, summer camp is filled with excitement, grandparents are visited, school is over and you can just chillax. Well in my school, school might be dead for two months but homework still lives. The new 7th graders are expected to write an essay over the summer on the book you read which has to be based on a social issue with an additional article that relates to the book. The whole project is due the first day of school. If you don't bring it in that day, 7th grade will be a long year for you. I'm telling you reader, it is not pretty. Just when you think the nightmare of homework is over, more of it piles up. It is eternal. Yes, summer homework does prepare you for 7th grade,  but man, does it have to be this long? I envy my comrades who have no summer homework at all. I mean shouldn't our homework be to relax and rest for the 7th grade instead of being stressed the whole summer trying to write an essay? Kids like us need a serious break.
What do you think?

Our canceled Field day

Our field day dream!
Every 6th grader in MS447 was very excited for field day! I guess we were all excited for the fun, physical games played at the park, the tasty summer food provided for us, or the fact that we will all be competing against each other and working together as a team. But our hopes were a bit too high for field day. The Department of Education (or DOE) wanted us to stay indoors at all times because of one reason. It was way too HOT!!!! So our field day was canceled because of that. Isn't that the whole point of having sprinklers, Department of Education? I would understand that field day is canceled if it is raining, but not because of the heat. When we found out field day was canceled, we changed from excited 6th graders to depressed 6th graders. So when the day of field day came, the teachers planned for us to do nonacademic activities to make it up for us, which was pretty nice of them. But it still wasn't the same. About 75% of the activities we did were watching movies. In technology we had a free period, and for ELA, we played hangman as a class and charades but the word you pick to act out had to be an adverb. Ugh. That was a nightmare because it was severely BORING. The only fun I got out of that field day was having no homework and no classwork! Yay! Most of the kids were absent at field day and I don't blame 'em. But my thoughts about field day and the Department of Education suddenly changed as soon as  I stepped out of the school doors. I took two steps and I looked like I just got out of the shower. While walking though Fort Greene park, were our field day was supposed to happen I said to myself, Thank you Department of Education. It  was like, a million degrees outside! I felt like I was about to faint in that heat just by walking! So I guess The DOE was right about us staying indoors. So tell me, if you were in the DOE, would you cancel field day because of the heat or let us have field day anyway?

The "clique" of friendship

"Popular Girls"
Young girl being excluded from a "clique"
The school year is quickly coming to an end but for some people, friendships are still a struggle. Most of the reasons why friendships can be hard for people like me is because of one thing. "Cliques." In case you don't know what a "clique" is, it is when friends form a group and exclude others from it. I know, silly right? "Cliques" were mostly common in the beginning of 6th grade and in all of the years of elementary school which was chaos for me! In elementary school I had a more of a bold experience with "cliques." In  school, there was always one "clique" in the whole grade. They would call themselves "The Popular Girls." They were all the same. Same walk, same hair,  they way they would talk would be the same, same clothes, same everything. "The Popular Girls" would always talk about the same annoying thing over and over again. Boys. They would always be bribing boys about going out with other girls and all that  boyfriend/girlfriend crap. I MEAN COME ON PEOPLE, WE'RE 12 FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! We only need to be focusing on that stuff when we're a lot older! But if you were a "Popular Girl" boys and dating would be your life. If you were not "popular" in my grade, you would always be looked down on. All secrets would be kept away from you. This is why many other girls who were not "popular" in school were desperate to be "popular." Friendship can be very challenging for those who are desperate to be "popular" because they are so focused on trying to find the key to the door of popularity. This makes them forget that their are other girls right next to them that are more worth being friends with instead of "popular girls." So, it's really up to you for what you want to do with friendship.  You can spend your life trying to get in to some "clique" or, go outside of the box and find someone who you can relate to.
You decide.

Fort Greene Park
Summer is creeping up on everyone and the school year is slowly coming to an end. However, the school year is not over yet. MS 447 teachers are giving students more homework and projects in order for all of us to end the school year strong and ready for the next grade. The staff at MS 447 have planned very fun and exciting activities for the 6th grade in order to show their appreciation for our hard work. One trip they have for us is field day. On field day we will spend the whole school day at Fort Greene park and play fun games and activities. If you happen to drop by Fort Greene park and see a bunch of crazy 6th graders having fun all over the place, that's probably us. The other trip they have planned for us to do is bowling. We will be bowling in groups of six at Melody Lanes. So this is a shout out to all 6th graders in the world, you are almost done with surviving the 6th grade! Please comment and tell me what you are doing over the summer!

Water Conservation

For my 6th grade project in Exploration I am making an action plan for water conservation. For my plan, I must educate as many people as possible in order to convince them to conserve water. This is a reason why I chose to create this blog! Fresh, clean water comes through our faucets and as soon as we are finished with it, we have just wasted too much water and I think it's time to cut down on that. So, there are things you can do  that not only saves water, but can cut down on your water bill. Here are some simple ways of how you can conserve water:

  1. When you take a shower, turn the water off as you bathe and turn it back on to rinse. Or take showers up to 2-3 minutes.
  2. While brushing your teeth, turn the faucet off while brushing and turn it back on for spitting the toothpaste out and rinsing your mouth
  3. Instead of rinsing your dishes while having the faucet run, fill a bucket with water and dip each sudsy dish or silverware in the bucket. Once you are finished with the bucket, water the water you used in the bucket in your  plants.
  4. Did you know that a fill load of dishes in a dishwasher uses less water then washing the dishes by hand?
  5. Fill a 1 liter bottle with sand, rocks soil (etc..) and put it in your toilet. this will let less water fill up in your toilet.
  6. Don't wash your car in your garage or in a parking lot. Instead, take it to a car wash because water is recycled when they use it to wash a car.
  7. Ladies, don't shave in while the water is running if you shave in the shower. This is because you will spend too much time in the shower and have a result of wasted water :(. What you should do is turn off the water while you shave.
  8.  Put a basin, barrel, bucket or anything else that can hold water that you have outside of your house while it rains to capture water. You can use this water for washing, drinking, or anything else you would do with water with that.
  9. Don't open those fire hydrants for fun because they pour out so much water and it is wasted too much. They are only used for emergencies!
  10. If you come a across water that you don't want or need don't dump it on the sink! Dump it in plants.
